SAS based SAN

SAS RAID subsystems combine the RAID controller and the SAS enclosure, providing you with an integrated solution that has fewer failure modes than a separate RAID controller and enclosure solution. The most straightforward functionality would be high-performance, reliable direct-attached-storage.

These units can also serve as the backbone of a high performance SAS based SAN. A 12Gb/s SAS-based SAN offers the highest performance available of any SAN type. SAS connections with 4800MB/s bandwidth and minimum latency provide faster speeds than Fibre Channel, 10GBe or iSCSI.

These SAN storage servers offer a fast and low cost solution for businesses that need a shared storage solution where the more advanced SAN features are not needed but performance is crucial. They are great for high availability failover clustering and can be connected to two nodes directly, or more through the use of a SAS Switch.

How it works...

What you need is:

A SAS enclosure with built-in RAID, such as a RAID Machine S6424RM.
A SAS HBA and a cable for each workstation and server attached to the unit.
Optionally a SAS switch to connect the SAS RAID enclosure and to the workstations. Not required for 2-node networks as those are supported natively by the SAN unit.
