This SAS expander board allows you to support more hard drives than your internal port controller will support. For example, if you have a Broadcom 9361-4i or 9361-8i you are limited to 4 and 8 drives respectively. If you use this board alongside those cards, you can use up to 20 hard drives on either card, plus you'll have the external ports to connect additional SAS expander-based JBODs.
