Thunderbolt
Thunderbolt gives you high performance storage just like the SAS interface without having to use a controller card in a PCIe expansion slot. Among other external solutions, Thunderbolt is much faster than eSATA and USB. Each Thunderbolt connector / cable carries two duplex lanes running at 10Gb/s each way. Thunderbolt 2 increases that to a single duplex lane running at 20Gb/s each way which compares very favorably with the 24Gb/s bandwidth of 6G SAS interfaces. Thunderbolt 3 has recently been introduced, which yields even higher performance at 40Gb/s throughput.
